Is Your Business Oversharing On Social Platforms?

Many businesses utilize social platforms to promote their products and services, raise brand awareness, and/or provide an inside/behind-the-scenes look into their business operations (ex: showcase processes and culture) to help inform and attract prospective clients and employees.

While good and legitimate reasons to tap into social platforms and their far-reaching audiences, inadvertently oversharing can create potential risks and concerns.

Does the content contain any confidential/proprietary information or intellectual property (IP) not intended for public consumption?

For instance, a company posts photos of a typical team brainstorming session to showcase a culture of open engagement with cross-functional collaboration across business areas. However, the posted photos inadvertently capture a whiteboard and display screen in the background containing budgets, concepts, and strategies that are confidential in nature.

It’s essential for businesses and their leaders to exercise due care when posting/releasing business-related content onto social platforms.

Businesses should have proper practices and procedures in place to review content for potential confidential/proprietary information or IP before posting/releasing into the public domain making certain employees and those creating, managing, or handling content for the business are well-informed and educated accordingly.
