QuickBooks Desktop 2022 Moves To Subscription Only Model

We’ve talked about having a good accounting system/solution to manage your business finances. While there are many accounting systems/solutions to choose from, QuickBooks remains a popular choice used by many businesses. It’s relatively easy to use and navigate. It’s adaptable and flexible to most businesses/business models and you’re sure to find accounting/finance professionals who have experience with QuickBooks.

QuickBooks comes in a variety of versions including QuickBooks Desktop Pro & Premier for Windows, QuickBooks Desktop for Mac, QuickBooks Enterprise and QuickBooks Online. Which version you choose depends on your business size and needs.

Prior to QuickBooks Desktop 2022, customers who wanted to avoid the subscription-based model could still purchase a perpetual license supported for up to three years (without receiving major product upgrades) for QuickBooks Desktop Pro & Premier for Windows and QuickBooks Desktop for Mac. However, with the 2022 release, Intuit has moved QuickBooks Desktop to a subscription-only model.

It certainly isn’t unexpected given Intuit moved QuickBooks Enterprise to a subscription-only model some years back and many software manufacturers have moved away from perpetual licensing in favor of subscription-based models. It’s important for businesses that are using perpetual licenses and who intend to stay with QuickBooks Desktop to plan and budget accordingly for the transition to the subscription-only model if they haven’t yet upgraded to QuickBooks Desktop 2022.

A couple other important points if you use QuickBooks Desktop/Enterprise:

Windows 11 Support

QuickBooks Desktop/Enterprise is not officially supported in Windows 11. If you are planning to migrate to Windows 11 or are considering moving your QuickBooks Desktop/Enterprise software to a Windows 11 computer, it’s best to hold off until Intuit officially announces support for Windows 11.

If you are using QuickBooks Desktop/Enterprise in a hosted environment, you’ll want to confirm with the hosting provider (ex: Right Networks) that their configuration files for remote desktop will work in Windows 11.

Hosting for QuickBooks Desktop Pro/Premier for Windows

Previously, Intuit offered the option of hosting for QuickBooks Desktop Pro/Premier through Right Networks; however, Intuit appears to have removed the reference to hosting. Intuit still references hosting as an option for QuickBooks Enterprise. That’s not to say Intuit no longer offers the option for hosting through Right Networks but if you want hosting for your QuickBooks Desktop Pro/Premier subscription, you’ll need to inquire with Intuit to see if they are still offering the option or if you need to purchase hosting directly through Right Networks or another authorized Intuit QuickBooks hosting provider.
